Found curtains you love, but they are too long for your window? Or moved home and discovered your favourite pair needs adjusting?
At MK Seamstress in Bletchley, Milton Keynes, we are seeing more curtains coming through the studio. A little preparation before your visit helps us understand the finish you want and assess the work involved.

1. Bring the curtains you want altered
For a pair of curtains, bring both panels so we can assess them together. If you have several pairs, label them by room and keep the measurements with the correct pair.
Let us know whether they are lined, blackout, interlined or unlined, and mention any damage or previous alterations. Please bring curtains clean and dry so they are ready to handle and assess.
2. Write down the finished length you want
Think about where you want the curtains to finish: above the sill, below it or near the floor. Record the desired finished drop and make a note of exactly where you measured from.
Heading styles, poles and tracks affect how curtains hang, so tell us whether yours have eyelets, a gathered heading or another fitting. If you are unsure about measuring, contact us for advice before bringing them in.
You can also record the existing length and how much shorter you think they need to be. We will discuss the measurements and proposed finish with you before work begins.
3. Take a few photos while they are hanging
A photo of the whole window, the curtain heading and the bottom edge can help explain what you would like changed. Include the pole or track where possible.
Photos are useful context alongside your measurements. Keep them on your phone to show us during your visit.
4. Tell us about the lining and finish
A pair of lightweight voiles needs different handling from heavy lined curtains. Bring any details you have about the fabric, and tell us whether you want to keep the existing hem style or discuss a different finish.
We assess the fabric, lining, size and construction before confirming the work and price. If you need the curtains back for a particular date, mention that when you enquire so we can discuss availability.
